Wabi-sabi – The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete… Each & every Flying Dutchman’s is different, no two are ever the same, each board records its tattered past by each scar, wrinkles & painted scrapes…
Down below in the deep dark depths of Huntington Beach California we make the Flying Dutchman’s handplanes by hand from old, forgotten, discarded ,warn out or broken skate boards. They were once destined for a cruel death buried in a lonely land fill, but now resurrected to bodysurf the seven seas. From the land to the sea!
Some more Boring Details-
The existing concave on a skate board deck ends up working perfect for catching & channeling an edge to ride & glide. So we then hand shape the rails, pulling them in & tapering the “nose” as well. Hand finished, we use 6 coats of a high gloss super TopSecret industrial strength high solids / low VOC waterbase finish. We fill the holes & set the anchors for the straps with an Environmentally Sustainable “Eco Resin” Epoxy wh/ comes from “Pine Tree” sap. The low profile strap anchors are non corrosive stainless steel… Finally the strap is made of Nice & Comfy Stretch Velcro. Which Holds the plane to your hand & is fully adjustable…

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port, doomed to sail the oceans forever. Sightings report the ship to be glowing with ghostly light. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a certain sign of doom.
